MONITOR Clerk’s Letter this is, again, unlikely to be something anyone would want to experience! If, as a Freeman of our Company, you have not applied for and gained your Freedom of the City we would highly recommend you do as the admittance ceremony is a truly unique experience; the Chamberlains Court, at Guildhall, admit Freemen in a ceremony steeped in history and meaning. Each ceremony is tailored to the individual and the Court Room is filled with treasures with a story attached to them. Until recently there was nothing from the Information Technologists Company in the C hamberlains Court but, recent recipient of the award, Michelle Gurney had the honour of presenting on behalf of our Company a Raspberry Pi that had been donated by Tech UK. WCIT Freeman Michelle Gurney receiving her Freedom Of The City Of London The Master and I, plus several guests and other members, had the pleasure of supporting Michelle as she ecoming a Freeman of the City of London is one received her Freedom and toasted her with Duke of Clarence Madeira. Of course, this is a tradition as of the great privileges of joining a Livery Company. When talking to people about being a well – The Duke of Clarence was drowned in Freeman the immediate response is always “Oh - you a vat of Madeira donated mean you can drive sheep over London Bridge!?”. by the City of London. Being a Freeman does indeed bring this right; however, the Metropolitan Police do not look kindly on those driving Clearly he didn’t fancy the silk rope! sheep to London Bridge in order to exercise their rights! B If you do want to drive sheep over London Bridge the Woolmens’ Company organise a drive every year where the bridge is closed for a day and the sheep driven back and forth. Please do get in contact with them to find out when the next event is happening. As a Freeman you also have the right to be hung with a silk rope; however To find out more about the Freedom of the City Ceremony and how to apply please contact the Chamberlain’s Court at Guildhall.
