porch. A heavy 4-foot-wide Dutch door invites you into rooms with original 6-foot-high Queen Anne windows that combine stained glass and clear glass mullions. The main hallway, dining room and parlor with 10-foot ceilings are all original. It was love at first sight when the Herzes stepped into the main hallway and looked up at cherry beams set perpendicular to dark polished wainscoting on the ceiling. Wainscotingcovered walls bordered with crushed stone dramatically frame a fieldstone fireplace, A long oak staircase with hand carved medallions winds up to the 5-by-7 painting of Christ Before Caiaphas, a copy of the 1610 original that hangs in The National Gallery in London. The painting was bought by Albert Payson Terhune as a gift for his wife. It hung in the music room at Sunnybank. The parlor, with a working fireplace (one of six in the house) and cherry wood paneling on the walls and ceiling, also houses the library. Furnished with an eclectic combination of antiques and reproductions, the home reflects its history. The Herzes purposely strayed from strict Victorian furnishings. They proudly display a hand-stitched reproduction of an antique N.J. quilt Erika made, and an oil painting she did of The Outlook from an original photo taken when they first bought the house. The original dining room is crowned with decorative paper on the ceiling. Stretched across the length of their formal table is a hand-quilted table runner that features a wedding ring pattern. A treasured grandfather’s clock from England dates back to the late 1700s. Double French doors lead out to the grand 17-feet deep wraparound porch which overlooks the lake and across to Sunnybank amid magnificent mountains. “We held my son’s wedding out here on this porch,” says Erika. ➤ MAY 2016 WAYNE MAGAZINE 45
