Dr. John Boehm Jr., former faculty member of
Alliance, OH, passed away on January 14, 2018
at the age of 76.
Dr. Boehm earned tenure as a full professor,
teaching at the University during the 1980s and
early 1990s, and also served as a University
Marshal at JU. He secured funding for the
first language lab for the Department of
Foreign Languages and served as department
coordinator. Known by faculty and students alike
as outgoing and friendly, with a “bigger-than-
life” personality, he planned and implemented
yearly Oktoberfest celebrations at the old
Rathskeller bar on campus that engaged the
students and the community while raising funds
for the University.
Helen Irene Glenn, 99, born in Atlanta, GA raised
in Macon, GA passed peacefully on May 21, 2018.
A WWII veteran in the European theater, Major
Glenn commanded the 1st all woman Woman’s
Army Corps( WAC) battalion. She served in
London, Paris, and Belgium during the war. She
worked with American prisoners of war who
communicated through the Red Cross passing
intelligence information which was decoded
by her unit.
After the war, Major Glenn earned a Master’s
degree from Indiana University in Journalism to
follow her Bachelor of Arts degree from Mercer
University. After being recruited by Dr. Robert
Spiro, Helen moved to Jacksonville, FL to work
as Dean of Women for Jacksonville University
and later held several administrative positions for
the University. After her retirement, Major Glenn
moved to St. Simons Island, where she continued
her community service through affiliations with
Rotary, Public Library Board, Veterans of Foreign
Wars, St. Simons United Methodist Church and
many other groups. St. Simons twice honored
her as their veteran of the year.
Cyrus “Russ” Jollivette, a former Jacksonville
executive who was the founding board chairman
of the Ritz Chamber Players, passed away April
30, 2018 in Miami. He was 71.
Mr. Jollivette, a native of Miami, enjoyed a long
and complex career in journalism, education
and business. He was a trustee of Jacksonville
University; a board member and chairman of the
United Way of Northeast Florida; a member of
United Way’s Tocqueville Society in Jacksonville;
a board member and chairman of the Jacksonville
Aviation Authority; and a W.E.B. DuBois Legacy
member in Jacksonville’s Gamma Beta Boulé.
Coach Barry Myers, Head JU Baseball Coach
from 1967-1973 passed away on August 10, 2017.
Myers loved baseball and spent more than a half
a century sharing the all-American sport with
young athletes.
Dean Emeritus Terence “Terry” Netter, former
Dean of the College of Fine Arts passed away
on June 27, 2018 at his home in Setauket, NY. He
is fondly remembered by faculty, administration,
and alumni as a faithful steward of the fine arts
during his seven-year tenure beginning in 1998.
Jacksonville’s Commodore League and was a
Flag Commodore. He also served on the Advisory
Board for the Salvation Army.
To memorialize and celebrate the life JU alum
Jon “Jay” Thomas Terrell '72, Swisher Theatre
now features a black permanent seat (pictured
below) to serve as a reminder of his talents
while inspiring those who seek a career as
distinguished as his. Thomas, beloved actor
comedian and radio personality best known for
his roles in the classic sitcoms "Murphy Brown"
and "Cheers " died last year at the age of 69.
Raised in Bronxville, NY, Terry later graduated
from Georgetown Prep and entered the Jesuit
Order, where he was ordained in Innsbruck,
Austria, in 1960. Dean Netter is counted among
many arts champions whose legacies have left
an indelible mark on Jacksonville University,
and who both challenged and inspired the
JU Community. Netter is survived by his wife
Therese, son Dylan and his beloved dog, Pip.
Jack Hoffmann Quaritius, 94, died peacefully
at home on July 11, 2018. He was born on Long
Island, NY and served as Dean of the College
of Business (now Davis College of Business)
at Jacksonville University. He also served as a
trustee at JU for 18 years.
As part of an extensive list of civic activities,
Jack served as president of the United Way
of Jacksonville, Jacksonville Chamber of
Commerce, the Board of Trustees for Jacksonville
University, Timuquana Country Club, the
downtown Rotary Club, where he was a member
for over 50 years, and for the Board of Trustees
of Bartram (now part of The Bolles School).
He served as a member of board for The Duke
Fuqua School of Business, Boys Club of America,
Children’s Home Society, Gator Bowl Assoc.,
Peninsular Pension Trust, and Penney Retirement
Community. He was a long time member of the
