ingapore is a world leader in
water management. Because
it is a small, flat island with
limited water sources, it has
had to learn how to do the best with
what it has. Despite its advances, it
still faced supply challenges during a
recent regional drought. So, I eagerly
accepted an invitation to join experts
from water-short regions around
the world to share experiences and
consider new strategies.
We discussed the importance
of approaches like desalination,

professor at the Wits School of
Governance. A former DG of Water
Affairs and commissioner of the
National Planning Commission,
he now advises on water and
development matters as a member
of the Strategic Advisory Group
of the UN’s Joint Monitoring
Programme for the water supply
and sanitation components of SDG6.
