Pipe dreams
After attending the INDUTEC 2017 trade show for pumps, valves, and pipes in
May, it became increasingly obvious that every manufacturer, distributor, or
supplier believes that his or her product is best.

works, desalination, potable, irrigation,
stormwater, and good old-fashioned
drainage. To level the playing field and
compare ‘apples with apples’, I chose
drainage as the focus.
The response was encouraging,
with manufacturers, suppliers, and
distributors all assuring me that
they would take part, voicing barely
concealed glee at the opportunity
to ‘show up the opposition’. In equal
enthusiasm, I sent each person with
whom I spoke directly and from whom
I received a commitment to participate,
an email outlining what I was looking
for, in a short questionnaire.
Unfortunately, it appears that
while the verbal flow is good in the
piping sector, there is a blockage with
implementation, regardless of the size
or make of pipe.

o in this vein it had me thinking
that this would be a terrific
opportunity to do a comparison,
to afford this sector of the industry a
chance to regale us all with why their
product line is best.
Pipes are a complicated sector,
comprising numerous materials, such
as PVC, concrete, galvanised, stainless
steel, and cast iron, and used in a
multitude of applications, including
technology
