The event’s presenting sponsor is Spokane-based Avista. The Team Challenge Cup will have 42 top figure skaters who will compete by continents — Team North America vs. Team Europe vs. Team Asia. Each continental team will have a non-competing, celebrity team captain. American Kristi Yamaguchi, the 1992 Olympic champion, and Great Britain’s Christopher Dean, the 1984 Olympic ice dance champion with partner Jayne Torvill, will captain Team North America and Team Europe, respectively. Team Asia's captain will be announced at a later date. Having a strong corporate community partner helped lock in Spokane as the event site. Barb Beddor, with Star USA, local organizers of the Team Challenge Cup said, “Avista coming on board really put Spokane over the top with U.S. Figure Skating and the selection committee in choosing S p o ka n e. Hav i n g a l o c a l p re s e n t i n g sponsor, like Avista who is engrained within the community and says ‘Whatever it takes, let’s get this thing done,’ goes a long way when we are looking to bring events in.” “We are proud to be a part of this exciting international event, which is estimated to have an economic impact of over $25 million for the Spokane area, and help bring this here,” said Dana Anderson, director of corporate communications at Avista. Yamaguchi was in Spokane to announce the competition in September. AWB President Kris Johnson was also on hand for the big reveal.
