Wanderlust: Expat Life & Style in Thailand August / September 2015 - Art & Education Issue | Page 47

Food THE PLACE This excellent art lovers and modern Thai food haven is a Phuket gem. Located away from the busy tourist centre, Lim’s is off the main road from Kalim Beach on Soi 7. Look out for the Orchid Hotel on the corner and Lim’s is 500 m further up on the right hand side. The artist in residence here is Khun Alongkorn Poochamchote (Kob) and he is also the restaurant’s chef! Neither trained nor educated in creative or culinary arts, Khun Kob has a degree in political science, which seems a far cry from his amazing talent as an abstract artist. He paints and cooks from the heart and learned to cook with his grandmother. Painting was a hobby at first and then became his life’s passion—talking with his hand flower salad with shredded chicken. The coconut, onion, peanuts, and sprouts create a wonderful balance of Thai flavours—sweet, sour and spicy! Follow this with the tender chicken massaman or the red curry crab dish. Both are served with steamed rice noodles, fried rice, and a plate of locally-grown stir-fried vegetables. THE CONCLUSION Khun Kob is a passionate, talented, and creative individual. There is evidence in his artwork, his culinary creations, and by listening to him speak about his crafts. His flair and personality come through to what he serves on the dinner plate—just really good food made with love. Stick around at Lim’s after dinner to chill out with a cocktail or two at neighbouring private club lounge NINE, which offers similar charming and artistic décor. Khun Kob’s artwork can also be seen at the Drift Art Gallery in Krabi Road, Phuket Town. Lim’s has been around for over 15 years, making it a pioneer in Phuket’s art gallery restaurant scene. Set in lush surroundings, the smooth concrete walls and floors give it a chic feel.
