TIPS FOR BEGINNERS
Holding the Paddle
Always grip the paddle with one hand on the top of the paddle
and the other on the center. Hold the paddle in front of you with
elbows bent at 90 degrees. This gives you a comfortable
spacing for paddling. Remember to keep the blade angle facing
away from you. Paddles float so if you fall and must let go,
don’t worry — it won't sink!
Standing
Get the board out into the water so that the fin cannot touch
the bottom. Start out on your knees and take a few strokes
on each side of the board. Slowly stand up with one foot
at a time and stay in the center of the board, with your feet
about shoulder width apart. Keep a slight bend in the knees,
especially if there are some waves, with your core centered over
the board.
Paddling
Paddle and scoop the water, as you try to balance without falling
in. The paddle direction for SUP goes opposite the direction
for kayaking, because it is more effective, results in a smoother
stroke, and places less strain on your shoulders. Paddle four or
five strokes on each side, so that you keep straight, and try to
look to the horizon to make sure you're stabilized.
