HEALTH & well-being persons to overcome stronger, larger opponent. I concentrated all of my time and money into learning Wing Chun from different masters and found myself travelling across Europe and South East Asia to further my studies. people are not able to recognise the skills being used, as they would have been performed so effortlessly and effectively that even the attacker would be left confused. When studying in China and Hong Kong, I trained with teachers in their early 70s and 80s who could easily hit and control me without using strength or speed. They taught me the true secrets of martial arts and self-defence for which I had spent the majority of my life searching. This gave me the confidence to create a protection system using the knowledge I have learned from the true masters. I developed the ELITE Self-protection system, which is ideal for women’s self-defence, and I’m now confident in teaching it because it has been tested and proven to work. There are many types of violence and reasons why you may become a victim. You may become a victim of mental, physical, emotional, cultural, or spiritual violence or even sexual violence or rape. WHAT DOES REAL SELFPROTECTION LOOK LIKE? You may have seen glorified movies showing unrealistic fighting skills from a female actress or promotional videos on YouTube or even Facebook. There are many different types of self-protection being taught openly to the general public. Some concentrate on fast kicks and powerful punches. Others teach wristlocks and grabs to escape an attack or even concentrate on some form of grappling. The problem with most selfprotection courses is that the responses being taught are unrealistic and can lead to a false sense of security. You may think you have learnt the correct skills to deal with a dangerous situation, only to put yourself in more danger. When someone has learnt real selfprotection skills, the skills are very hard to see. These techniques can diffuse or avoid a potential dangerous situation before it has the chance to escalate. In the very rare occasion that the situation does escalate, the trained person will use footwork, correct body positioning, and strategic strikes in order to leave quickly. Most DOES SELF-PROTECTION PREVENT VIOLENCE? Whatever the reason may be, learning the correct self-protection skills will both prevent and stop these kinds of attacks from happening. If you have the skills to remove yourself from a potential threat or attack before the assault occurs, then you will have already won the fight without having to fight. If you are forced into a situation where you cannot escape without conflict, you’ll need to know the correct way of striking and footwork to overcome your attacker and exit the situation. WHAT ARE THE CHANCES OF BEING ATTACKED? There are an alarming number of sexual attacks reported. A recent survey concluded that there are on average 86 reported sexual assaults on women and children carried out each day in Thailand. That is almost 1 sexual assault every 15 minutes. The sexual assaults happen to victims of all ages in everyday situations from children walking home from school to women on their way to work. It doesn’t matter what time of day or what location, you could always be a potential target. WHO CAN LEARN SELFPROTECTION SKILLS? The ELITE self-protection course has been designed for people of all ages, shapes, and sizes. Our youngest student was only 8 years old and our eldest was 86. You don’t need to have any previous experience in martial arts or fitness. It doesn’t matter if you cannot run fast or lift heavy weights. The idea of self-protection is to escape and avoid potential threats and dangerous situations. The ELITE skills you will be taught are easy to learn and are suitable for everyone. WHAT IS TAUGHT DURING THE ELITE SELF-PROTECTION COURSE? The course will teach you all the skills needed to avoid, diffuse, and escape any type of dangerous or threatening situation. The course is structured and systematic, ensuring that each student receives the same information and develops the same skills as they progress through the course. ©© Recognise potential threats and dangerous situations before they happen ©© Position your hands, feet, and body correctly www.wanderlustmag.comWANDERLUST  35
