Wanderlust: Expat Life & Style in Thailand April / May 2015 - The Health & Wellness Issue | Page 13

Fashion & Style clip; find a meet up or a club. Learn, grow, play, smile! all over the world with whom you share a special bond. HOW HAS LIVING ABROAD CHANGED YOU? I’ve learned that your attitude determines your direction. It’s important to know what you want and just go for it. Living abroad has taught me not to be afraid of change. Change means you may lose something good, but you can gain something so much better. Life as an expat has made me realize while you may have changed, no thing much changes at home, which is actually a really nice thing. Living abroad has also made me open myself to new friendships which I otherwise wouldn’t have made back home. This has been one of my favorite parts of being an expat—meeting people from WHAT BRINGS YOU TRUE HAPPINESS? Happiness is something that is built over time, even taking a lifetime. I feel it doesn’t just occur based off a single event but is shaped by multiple events, experiences, people, and places. True happiness must come from the inside, though. If happiness is fueled only from external influences, it’s not sustainable. I’m still working towards my true happiness and I’m content with that. I know that each day will mould my happiness and I’m excited to see where it leads me. WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR EXPAT WOMEN MOVING TO THAILAND? You have to meet friends. That is the number one most important thing to do as an expat. There will always be other new people around, so don’t feel awkward or scared to go out if you’re new to town. Get involved in something, anything: sport (of course!) or art, women’s clubs, book clubs, etc. Remember to be compassionate to others when you’re no longer a newbie but an experienced expat.
