THE WAND – BARNENS BÄSTA VÄN !
WAND I UTBILDNINGEN .

Sensation of Pain when using Computerized Injection Technique ( the Wand™ ) in the Palate . Birgitta Jälevik DDS , PhD ; Gunilla Klingberg DDS , PhD
Objects . Pain control when treating children and adoles- cents is of great importance in order to prevent future dental anxiety and treatment problems . Local anaesthesia offers an almost painless dental treatment but the injection itself is often associated with fear and anxiety . Topical anaesthesia , slow injection and good psychological preparing reduce the pain . In spite of that , the experience of palatal injection is often painful because of the resistance of the palatal tissue . The aim of this study was to compare the sensation of pain when using computerized injection – the Wand™ - compared to conventional technique in surgical procedures involving the palate .
Material and methods . Twenty adolescents in need of bilateral identical surgical measurements as surgical exposure of canines and / or extractions for orthodontic reasons in the upper jaw were offered conventional anaesthesia on one side and computerized low pressure anaesthesia on the other side . The VAS scale was used to report the pain immediately after injection and also after the surgical procedure was finished to report the pain experience of the whole procedure together . The statistical method used was Wilcoxon matched pairs test .
Results . The reported sensation of pain was significantly lower , ( p < 0.01 ), when using the Wand™ . However , there was no difference in the global pain report of the total surgical procedure ( p > 0.2 ). Patients reporting fear of injection experienced much less pain when having a computerized injection ( p < 0.001 ), while there was hardly any difference in pain experience among patients with no or only little fear for injection .
Conclusion . Computerized injection technique in the palate was less painful compared to conventional injection technique especially among those who reported fear for injections .

Studier
Hochman M et al . Computerized Local Anesthetic Delivery vs . Traditional Syringe Technique . Subjective Pain Response . New York State Dental Journal 1997 : 24-29 Fifty dentists were given contra lateral palatal injections . One side was injected with the Wand injector with computer-controlled flow rate . The control side was injected using a standard manual syringe ; with operator-dependent flow rate and pressure , which cannot be controlled accurately . The dentists rated the Wand two to three times less painful than the manual injection . Forty-eight of the fifty subjects said that the Wand injector was more comfortable . Eighty-two percent of the dentists in the Wand injection group perceived no pain or “ minimal pain ” with the Wand . The inclusion of computer-controlled administration offers the benefits of the past system with new enhancements that were previously unobtainable . This is the first study to demonstrate that an optimal flow rate does exist in the administration of local anesthetics .
Friedman M , Hochman M . A 21 st Century Computerized Injection System for Local Pain Control . Compendium 1997 October ; 18 ( 10 ): 995-1003 A computer-controlled local anesthesia system ( The Wand ) represents a contemporary alternative to the traditional syringe . The system generates a precisely controlled anesthetic flow rate that eliminates the need for the operator to use thumb pressure to administer the injection . The lightweight pengrasp handle results in greater tactile feedback , precision , operator ease , and patient comfort . In the maxillary arch , the AMSA injection offers clinical advantages over traditional anesthesia techniques . In the mandibular arch , a safe and predictable PDL injection technique may replace the need for an inferior alveolar block in numerous clinical situations .
Krochak M , Friedman N . Using a Precision-Metered Injection System to Minimize Dental Injection Anxiety . Compendium 1998 ; 19 ( 2 ): 137-148 In this study , 90 % of dental patients reported being at least mildly anxious about receiving dental injections . According to survey results , fear levels decreased significantly when the new technology ( The Wand ) was used .
THE WAND – BARNENS BÄSTA VÄN !
Wand är det perfekta hjälpmedlet vid behandling av barn . Många pedodontister använder Wand redan idag och Svenska Pedodontiföreningen säger :
” Vi ser positivt på användningen av Wand injektionsteknik ”
WAND I UTBILDNINGEN .
Wand används på tandläkarhögskolorna i bl a Stockholm , Malmö , Göteborg , Umeå , Oslo , Bergen och Århus . Wand ingår även i anestesihandboken på amerikanska tandläkarutbildningar .
