Walden welcomes new yoga studio

By JASPREET GILL jgill @ tcnewspapers . com

“ Yoga has the ability to bring people together ,” says Jennie Ananda Leonard , the owner of the new Kamala Yoga and Wellness Studio in Walden . “ Especially right now during a time where such hardship has been happening in our nation , people need a sense of community .”

Ananda , who has been an occupational therapy assistant for over four years , opened up the studio in September . She first started doing yoga as a way to relax in between her more rigorous workout routines . She decided to become certified through Yoga Alliance , the largest international nonprofit association in the yoga community .
“ I ’ ve dabbled in yoga for as long as I can remember ,” she says . “ When I broke my wrist , I couldn ’ t work out anymore . So I turned to yoga and have been doing it consistently for about two years now . I became certified through Yoga Alliance after completing a 200 hour course in the Spring .”
Although Ananda lives in the Village of Montgomery , she saw Walden as the perfect spot for her studio .
“ Walden is an up and coming quaint little village ,” she says . “ It ’ s being revived . I love how beautiful the town is . One day I just drove in Walden and saw a space open . I loved the space and saw so much potential in it .”
She works with nine other instructors to provide a range of classes for the Walden community .
“ I don ’ t want to sound corny but it was as if the universe just opened up to me ,” she said . “ I had people literally just come to me asking to teach yoga . Not one single person asked me how much they were going to be paid . They just really love what they do .”
Kamala Yoga and Wellness offers 13 classes , from more beginner classes to advanced classes to private lessons . Intro to Yoga , one of Ananda ’ s favorite classes to teach , is designed for anyone in the community who is new to yoga and covers basic foundational yoga poses . Students learn how to build their strength , increase flexibility , expand body awareness and create a practice of calming their minds .
“ Intro to Yoga is my favorite class to teach because anyone can do it ,” she says . “ So many people think that yoga is difficult . They ’ ll see pictures of people on Instagram doing handstands and think that ’ s yoga , but that ’ s far fetched . I

wanted to teach something very simple for everybody by breaking down the moves to the simplest form .”
Ananda is also a huge fan of Kundalini yoga , which she teaches at her studio . Kundalini yoga is a practice that collectively combines all different types of yogas .
“ I want yoga to be deeper than just

working out ,” she says . “ Because that ’ s what yoga is - it ’ s more than just a workout . It ’ s a tool to bring people together .”
The new studio is located at 41 Main Street in Walden and offers several classes throughout the week . Classes start as early as 9 a . m . on weekdays and people can sign up online or call Ananda at ( 845 ) 656-6369 .
