Shawangunk adding security cameras at Garrison Park
By TED REMSNYDER
Shawangunk kids who like to shoot hoops at Garrison
Park are in luck, as the basketball court at the park is
in line for some renovations thanks to some generous
donations from local organizations. At the Shawangunk
Town Board meeting on June 7, Bob Garrison of the
Rotary Club presented the town with a check for $1,000 to
fund security cameras at Garrison Park that will keep an
eye on the court in order to ensure that no one vandalizes
the site.
The owners of Ed’s Seamless Gutters will donate
the money for the new basketball hoops in the park,
as the old rims have seen better days. “They offered to
donate them and install them, because the hoops are all
wrecked,” Town Supervisor John Valk said. “It seems
that the youngsters have a lot of energy, and they hang
on them and bend them. The one that’s left over there is
bent sideways.”
The surveillance cameras should act as a deterrent
against players breaking the basketball rims, and the
system could be expanded to additional town parks. “The
cameras could possibly allow us to catch whoever’s doing
it and have them pay for the next set,” Valk said. “There’s
vandalism in the parks, and we’d like to eventually do
the cameras in all of the parks. We’re increasing security
around Town Hall in the parking lot, just so if anything
happens we’ll have a record of it. All of the doorways
are covered with cameras. We can’t have a camera in
the courtroom because they don’t allow it because of
juveniles.”
During Thursday’s meeting, Shawangunk Police
Sgt. Gerald Marlatt presented his monthly report to
the board, and the officer came equipped with statistics
contrasting police department numbers for the first five
months of this year as opposed to 2017. In the first half
of 2018, the department made 62 arrests versus 45 arrests
recorded through the first six months of 2017. This year
so far, the agency has issued 173 tickets, while 138 were
issued through the first half of last year.
Traffic accidents in the town were steady year-to-year,
with 75 recorded at this point last year, with 76 incidents
transpiring in 2018. Calls for service are down this year,
with 1,464 received last year versus only 1,201 calls this
year so far. Marlatt noted that the increased arrest
numbers and higher number of tickets issued came
from the police department following up and following
through on investigations, instead of the agency being
harder-edged with enforcement.
