Local veterans participate in the celebration .

The Village of Walden held its tenth annual Flag Day celebration on Sunday , honoring local veterans and celebrating the meaning and importance of the stars and stripes .
Flag day commemorates the adoption of the United States ’ flag by the second continental congress on June 14 , 1777 . The flag will be turning 241 years old this year .
Becky Pearson , former mayor and member of the Veterans ’ Memorial Park subcommittee and committee member Jodi Lynn , said the celebration is meant to honor the flag and veterans , and to educate citizens on flag history and proper etiquette .
Walden ’ s ceremony is one of only three flag day celebrations in Orange County , according to county legislator Mike Anagnostakis . He spoke at the celebration , quoting a speech by a prisoner who was liberated from Dachau , a German death camp , by American troops in 1945 .
“ Perhaps only those who have had their humanity brutally torn from them as I did can fully appreciate this great country and what its flag represents ,” Anagnostakis said . “ Every American who had a deference for the sacrifices that purchased and maintained their freedoms should revere and honor our flag .”
Town of Montgomery supervisor Rodney Winchell opened the ceremony with a speech by Ronald Reagan from June 14 , 1986 .
“ And let us not forget that in honoring our flag we honor the American men and
women who courageously have fought and died for it over the last few hundred years ,” Winchell said . “ Patriots have set an ideal above consideration of self . Our flag flies free today because of that sacrifice .”
The ceremony also included a military medley , a recitation of the pledge of allegiance , a recitation of flag etiquette and a flag-folding demonstration by boy scout troops 31 and 33 , a rendition of “ God Bless America ” and the reading of the poem “ Americanism ” by Girl Scout Service Unit 285 .
Walden mayor Susan Rumbold spoke of the flag ’ s history and its importance to its citizens .
“ Some argue that our flag is merely a piece of cloth , and nothing that should be honored or revered . Arguing against such ignorance would be like trying to shove a melon through the eye of a needle — a waste of time and a waste of a good cantaloupe ,” Rumbold said . “ Originally considered a piece of military equipment , the flag was used so that troop positions could be seen . It started as a beacon , and so it is still today .”
And Hannah Garcia-Curet , Little Miss Walden , spoke about the what the flag means to her .
“ The American flag remains a living piece of history and a source of pride and unity for all Americans ,” Garica- Curet said . “ The stars and stripes embody the qualities that make our nation great , which are liberty , justice , freedom , love of country and national purpose .”
Boy Scout Nate Walker said he was proud to honor the flag and serve local veterans .
Laura Fitzgerald
“ They get to see a younger generation , that ’ s it ’ s not just parents that are forcing their kids to come out here , it ’ s people that wanna be here ,” Walker said .
The celebration is a collaboration between the Walden Community Council , the Veterans Memorial Park subcommittee , the Veterans of Foreign Wars post 2946 , the American Legion post 0158 and Valley Central Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps .
Girl Scout Service Unit 285 reads “ Americanism ,” demonstrating what the flag means to its citizens .
