was tied in with the Colden Mansion .
Robin Encenza , a direct descendent of the Colden Mansion estate , says that she thinks the property belonged to one of the original owner ’ s sons , David , a farmer who inherited the house after the passing of both of his parents .
“[ David ’ s ] father stated in his will that the [ house ] would go to him after [ David ’ s ] mother deceased ,” said Encenza . “ His mother lived until 1815 and [ his father ] deceased around 1799 ... My thought is that [ David ’ s ] family may have resided there , unless they resided in the big house but I ’ m not sure they did ... I ’ m still trying to look through census data and make sense of things .”

Music series founder stepping aside

By JASPREET GILL jgill @ tcnewspapers . com
During Monday ’ s Village of Montgomery board of trustees meeting , Howard Garrett , who launched the Grand Montgomery Chamber Music and Theater Series with his wife Judy , announced his decision to step down from his role after 31 years .
“[ The Grand Montgomery Chamber Music and Theater Series ] was not just for the people of Montgomery , but it was all over Orange County ,” said Garrett . “ We ’ ve had some of the best people from all over the world and I just feel , after 31 years , it ’ s about time for
Howard Garrett somebody else to go ahead and do the same thing .”
Garrett thanked the village board saying that he couldn ’ t have made the concert series successful without their support .
“ I can ’ t thank you , on behalf of the village , enough for all you ’ ve done over the years ,” said Village of Montgomery Mayor L . Stephen Brescia . “[ They ’ re ] going to be tough shoes to fill ... We would like [ the concert series ] to continue .”
On Sunday , Dec . 10 , the Grand Montgomery Chamber Music and Theater Series will present the Pine Bush Community Band at 3 pm at the Montgomery Senior Center .
In other news , there are a few changes coming to the village in the future .
In about a month , new speed limits will be established in the Village of Montgomery . The existing 30 MPH speed limit on Route 211 will be extended by 500 feet south of Chandler Lane and a new 45 MPH speed limit will be established from the main entrance to the Orange County Airport ( Dunn Road ) to 500 feet south of Chandler Lane , a distance of 1000 feet .
A study conducted by the New York State Department of Transportation found it appropriate to make these changes that are meant to provide a buffer zone to step down the operating speed between the 55 MPH speed limit and the 30 MPH speed limit .
This Thursday , Dec . 7 , a Pearl Harbor Remembrance Ceremony will take place at 11 am at the Parkland Pavilion by the Wallkill River .
The next board of trustees meeting will be held on Dec . 19 at 7:30 pm at Village Hall , located on 133 Clinton St .

Drury Lane farmhouse may give way to Dunkin Donuts

Construction surrounds the house on the corner of North Drury Lane , which has been speculated to be a part of the Colden Mansion estate . The house is being torn down in an effort to realign the road and a Dunkin Donuts will take its place .
Encenza , who now lives in Highland , says that although development is necessary , the disregard of preserving and teaching history is sad .
“ I think that some folks fail to understand what makes Montgomery special ,” says Williams . “ People are not attracted to Montgomery for her warehouses , [ Dunkin ] Donuts and current housing developments and , in this case , re-aligned roads . It is the open spaces complimented by the intertwining of historic buildings that make us special .”
The house on the corner of North Drury Lane has not been torn down yet , but the big yellow bulldozers and “ do not cross ” signs are reminders that nothing will stop the demolishing of the house .
