Walkway Marathon: 2016 Digital Race Packet | Page 57

Welcome to the 2016 Dutchess County Walkway Marathon ! My role as Medical Director is to make sure all participants have a wonderful experience and stay healthy for the duration of the race . For your own safety , please take the time to read this document prior to the event .
Information about the course : Large sections of the Rail Trail are shaded , but the Walkway is in full sun . First aid / medical tents are located at 2 mile intervals along the Rail Trail in proximity to water stations . The course is narrow and may be congested in areas , so be mindful of other runners . In the unlikely event of a major emergency , please follow instructions and do not wander off on your own . There is a communications system in place to ensure that all participants are safely accounted for .
Medical tents & First Aid stations : The Medical tent , located at the start / finish area , is equipped to provide acute emergency care to participants . Separate areas will be designated for physical or massage therapy . The eight ( 8 ) First Aid stations will provide basic first aid and are identified by a red cross . Fluids , Tylenol , Vaseline and basic first aid supplies will be available at medical tents and first aid stations .
How to prepare : Even seasoned runners can be adversely impacted by high temperature and humidity , so be prepared for the possibility of heat-related illness , exertional heat stroke and hyponatremia . Be aware of weather conditions in Poughkeepsie during the days preceding the marathon , and acclimatize yourself to similar environmental conditions . Weigh yourself before and after training sessions to estimate your fluid loss under different conditions , so you can hydrate appropriately prior to the race . Excessive hydration can cause hyponatremia , a potentially life-threatening condition . If you feel ill or have recently been ill with fever , vomiting , diarrhea , or chest discomfort , you should consider withdrawing from the race . If you have any concerns , please consult with medical staff on site prior to the start of the race .
Hydration guidelines : We recommend you drink 10-20 oz of fluid / hour during the race , in portions of 4-6 oz every 20 minutes . After the race , you should drink roughly 1 quart of fluid per 2 lbs of weight lost . Scales will be available at the medical tent .
Clothing and other gear : Wear appropriate light , loose-mesh clothing , and footwear you have already broken in . Bring your own medications , supplements , sunscreen , insect repellent , and dry clothing to change into at the finish .
General comments : Please provide your name , personal contact information and emergency contact information as directed . Be prepared to provide relevant personal and medical information when getting medical assistance . If you refuse medical care you will be asked to sign a release .
The medical team joins me in wishing you a wonderful day and fulfilling experience , and we hope to see you again next year !
Best regards ,
Henry M . Kurban , MD , MBA , MPH , FACPM Medical Director
