VPHS • The advanced planning for a covered walkway at the entrance of the school (in partnership with the VP Legends) Education in the Eastern Cape is in a sorry state, despite many departmental officials working hard to make it work. However, Victoria Park is one of those institutions that have taken the bull by the horns and striven to ensure quality education for our learners. I would like to applaud the combined efforts of a motivated teaching staff, proud learners, a pro-active Governing Body and interested parents in making Victoria Park High the pocket of excellence it still is today. All of these initiatives add value to the comfort and/ or excellence of our teaching, cultural and sporting initiatives. The learners of Victoria Park have expressed their gratitude, through the SRC, for putting them first when planning for an exciting VP future. I would like to, on behalf of the school, thank Mrs Caro Morgan and her team for the care, guidance and passion they have shown the school. Mr Mike Vermaak. A Message from the Chairlady of the Governing Body new seating for pupils, new feature windows, upgraded computer labs, a fleet of new buses, smart lockers for our pupils, a new auditorium for the music students, and much more. And, less obviously, a strong marketing drive aimed at enhancing the image of the school in the market place has also been initiated. Most notably, this is the year we got started on fundraising for an upgrade to our sportsfields that will include an Astroturf. A project of this size demands a large team of people behind the scenes, and we are hiring a suitably-experienced person to manage that and to spearhead fundraising for this and other projects in the future. Academics are getting plenty of attention too, and we are currently installing WiFi over the entire school, to underpin our plans for online learning in the near future. This year has been particularly notable for the atmosphere of co-operation and trust between the school staff and the Governing Body – an easy relationship that has enabled us to get so much done. It’s been a busy and productive year for the Governing Body. At the beginning of 2014, we made the decision to spend a million Rand from our savings. This may sound like a great deal of money, but there were nearly R2 million of requests from teachers and committees, as well as many maintenance items and “nice to haves”. Parents and staff were surveyed about their preferences and the governors then debated and decided. I think the year can best be summed up by something that came out of a branding workshop we did with a top marketing company earlier this year. The overwhelming feeling from a panel of pupils, teachers and parents was that Victoria Park High is a happy school. Long may that continue! As a result, you will have seen many changes about the school, if you’ve been watching - new paving, Mrs Caroline Morgan 7
