The 2014 cricket season has been a season that has
challenged the players in many ways. The team was
filled with youngsters who have developed into phenomenal cricketers over the last season and a half.
The team started off well, with a very good win over
DF Malherbe, bowling them out for 44 and then
beating them by 9 wickets. However, although the
team put in some strong performances throughout
the season, they lost their way somewhat and unfortunately lost the majority of the first term’s matches
very narrowly.
Just before the end of the first half of the season they
managed to find their rhythm again and veered back
to their winning ways with a nail-biting victory over
St Dominics Priory, beating them by one run on the
final delivery of the innings. Chad Batty displayed
nerves of steel by conceding only one run in bowling the last over of the match.
In the third term we took part in the annual Pearson High School cricket festival. Facing some
tough opposition, the VP boys grew from strength
to strength. The first match was a PRO 20 match
against a formidable Grey 1st team. Grey batted
first, posting a mammoth total of 163/3 in their 20
overs. VP unfortunately lost wickets early in their
innings and struggled to build partnerships and ended their innings on 71/9 in 20 overs. VP lost by 92
runs. VP then played Union High in a declaration
match. Batting first, VP posted a low score of 87
all out. Best batsman was Kyle Hodgkinson who
scored a well played 44. Union scored 220/3 Decl.
in their innings. VP batted for a second time and had
to play for a draw by not losing more than 5 wickets. Unfortunately VP lost their 5th wicket half an
hour before close of play, losing the match by one
innings and 40 runs.
The last match of the festival was against a competitive Marlow side, Marlow batted first scoring
118/10 in 33 overs. Chad Batty and Joshuan Assam
both took three wickets in the match. VP then batted, scoring the winning runs, 120, in 15 overs with
Kyle Hodgkinson blasting 62 runs off of only 26
deliveries. This was a fine display of batting from
VP’s number one batsman.
The yearly highlight is the cricket tour to East Lon-
