VPHS First and second team players participated in the championship which worked on a knock-out format. Highlights of the championship included the decision of second team player Mihlali Lukwe (Grade 8) to put first team captain Carla Visser (Grade 11) through her paces. But Carla had experience on her side, and her victory allowed her to secure a spot in the semi-finals. Jami Fraser and Kate Weakly provided a great deal of entertainment as they put up a good fight to see which one of them would proceed to the championship final. Finally, in the fourth set, it was Kate who successfully secured a win. This meant that Kate Weakly would challenge Hannah Howell in the final (these two normally play together as partners in the number 1 and 2 spots). The final was tense and exciting, and it was difficult to predict which way the game would go, however it eventually slid in Kate Weakly’s favour. Kate is only in Grade 8, but has proven time and again that her feisty, never-say-die approach on the court, coupled with her well sharpened tennis skills, provides the winning formula that keeps her at number 1 on the VPHS tennis ladder. It was another exciting and rewarding year for the tennis family, and we are looking forward to seeing what 2015 has in store for us. Mrs Kelly Ferreira 180
