Boys’ Tennis
The Boys’ 1st team enjoyed yet another successful
and fruitful year. After winning the 2A league last
year, they went one better and won the 1C league.
In doing this they became the first tennis team to
achieve this feat at Victoria Park High.
We knew the 1C league would require double the
effort the boys had made in previous years and you
could see in the training sessions how determined
they were to carry on with their impressive form.
The boys started their campaign on the perfect note
with an 11-3 victory against Nico Malan. Captain
Dario Patsalos led from the front, winning his match
without dropping a game. This was the perfect platform to the start of the season and confidence was
high.
Our next fixture was at home against Grey High,
who have won this league five times in the past seven years. Still on a high from the win against Nico
Malan, VP started strongly and once again prevailed
as victors, winning 12-2. This was a collective effort
from the team, winning all their matches and only
dropping two sets.
Starting the season with two wins from
two matches showed that we justly deserved our promotion status to the 1st league.
The next match against Framesby was a must win
clash for both teams. Framesby won the previous
encounter a year ago and were determined to repeat
the feat. After the completion of the first two matches, the scores were tied. In the final two matches we
knew that one win would secure the victory for us.
It wasn’t meant to be and we ended up drawing the
match against Framesby, still undefeated though.
We played our last match of the term against traditional rivals, Pearson. The players wasted no time
and dispatched Pearson with a score of 11-3. That
meant we finished the 1st term with three wins and
one draw.
During the March/April school holidays, Mrs. Ferreira and I took the players to East London where
they attended numerous training workshops with
professional coaches. They also played matches
against the likes of Clarendon Girls High and Selborne College.
