Our School Safety and Security Policy has been updated and a working group has been established to ensure safety in the school. A huge thank you is to go to the teachers and the whole school for their participation and the excellent manner in which the fire drill was conducted. VP will do training of fire marshals during 2015. The school had two fire drills in the third term, a prepared fire drill and one which was done as a surprise. We had the GM Foundation Safety person, Mr Jack Mrs Angelique Jennings Guidance and Counselling and have been given help with applications for bursaries and institutions. Advice on subject changes and guidance on study methods to improve marks has also been well utilized. At Victoria Park High School, the emphasis is on the holistic development of each learner. However, while emphasizing the academic, cultural and sporting development, one cannot neglect the emotional and spiritual facets of one’s everyday existence. The Counsellor is therefore a valuable player in serving and providing a personal link between learner and school, and learner and parent, based on positive firmness in the nurture and intervention process. During the course of the year, many institutions have been invited to the school to enlighten learners on opportunities available towards tertiary study. The annual careers’ day was organized once again to give the Grade 11 and 12 learners the opportunity to explore different careers. Sixty guest speakers enjoyed interacting with learners in the classroom, giving them up-to-date information on the “world of work”. The feedback from everyone concerned was extremely positive and proved to be a great success. Teenagers who are open to counseling have been better able to implement coping strategies that will best support them to meet life’s everyday challenges.
