It is said that many people are more afraid of public speaking than they are of dying. This is hard to
believe, but if it is true, then it provides even more
reason why it was so encouraging to see the great
amount of interest in the English Oratory competition. This year there were so many eager participants that we were again forced to run a preliminary
round to narrow down the number of speakers that
would take to the lectern in the final competition.
Once the speakers had been selected to participate
in the final competition, they then proceeded to
complete workshops in the afternoon that dealt with
the elements and aspects that make up a powerful,
winning speech.
This year’s speakers embraced everything from serious, current issues to fun and light-hearted topics.
We were privileged to have an objective and diverse
panel of adjudicators , including our very own Mrs
Mariette van der Walt and Mr Garreth Jacobson.
The guest adjudicator this year was Julie Coetzee,
founder and owner of Fly Piggy Media House. Julie
commended the speakers on their bravery and passion, and also complimented them on their interesting and thought-provoking subject matter.
The adjudicators and audience members agreed that
it was no easy feat deciding who would take the top
spots in the competition, but in the end they were
awarded as follows:
