This is hard to believe, but if it is true, then it provides even more reason why it was so encouraging to see the great amount of interest in the English Oratory competition. This year there were so many eager participants that we were again forced to run a preliminary round to narrow down the number of speakers that would take to the lectern in the final competition. Once the speakers had been selected to participate in the final competition, they then proceeded to complete workshops in the afternoon that dealt with the elements and aspects that make up a powerful, winning speech. This year’s speakers embraced everything from serious, current issues to fun and light-hearted topics. We were privileged to have an objective and diverse panel of adjudicators , including our very own Mrs Mariette van der Walt and Mr Garreth Jacobson. The guest adjudicator this year was Julie Coetzee, founder and owner of Fly Piggy Media House. Julie commended the speakers on their bravery and passion, and also complimented them on their interesting and thought-provoking subject matter. The adjudicators and audience members agreed that it was no easy feat deciding who would take the top spots in the competition, but in the end they were awarded as follows: 120
