House of Souls - By Vanessa Yang “Honey, we‟re moving out today! Wake up!” “Yes, Mom..” I frantically pulled myself out of bed and took a quick bath. I brushed my teeth, combed my hair and prepared my luggage. I was moving out. As soon as I finished packing up, I ran down the stairs before Mom started screaming again. I saw her sitting at the dinner table impatiently. “What took you so long?” she asked. “I was just..” “Well, never mind. Let‟s just hurry up and go before Dad pulls out!” Mom and I ran towards the door and closed it before us. This is it. I took a quick last glance at the house and sighed. I heard Dad shout my name and ran towards the car and deposited my luggage in the back seat. Then, I sat down. We drove away . We arrived at an old town after about 3 hours. I know something was odd when I looked around the town. The plants were all wilted and most of the buildings were ruined. Is this the town we‟re moving to in? I hope not. I uneasily asked, “Mom, Dad, are you absolutely sure this is the place?” My Dad confidently answered, “ Yes.” Well, that‟s great. After about 5 minutes, Mom spoke up. “I love how this town looks! Honey, I‟m absolutely sure you would make some great, new friends here.” Yeah, right. Like making friends in this town would be easy. I didn‟t answer her. We finally arrived at our new home. It looked.. not great, to be honest. I got off the car and went inside the house. Wow! With one quick look at the surroundings, I was absolutely sure this place was haunted. My Mom and Dad went inside. They were carrying the luggage upstairs where the bedroom was. I helped them and dropped the luggage on the floor. I then excused myself for a while so I could make a call to my friend, Amanda. I went to the bathroom. I was about to dial the number again when I heard people loudly whispering and the same moan again. I was already crept out by now. “Ignore it, they will go away,” I thought again. I was about to dial the number when I heard a moan behind me. Yes, a moan. It sounded like someone or something was in pain. But when I looked around me, I saw nothing. “Maybe I‟m just hearing things,” I thought.. I took a last try to dial the number. And, as you guessed, the sounds were after me again. 61
