“In the dust of defeat as well as the laurels of victory there is a glory to be found if one
has done his best.” ― Eric Liddell
SPEECH
Freedom Of Speech
In Sweden we take the freedom of speech for granted, it’s even one of our
fundamental laws. But in many countries in the world, people have to be
very careful about what they say. In my country, Sweden, we have
freedom of speech which means that you can say almost what you want.
Lars Vilks is a Swedish artist who, with his art, has made some muslims
very angry. He was in Copenhagen to speak about the freedom of speech.
Because of that, one person was shot to death and several policemen
were wounded. Some people think that the freedom of speech is so
important that you should support people like this artist at any cost, while
some think that the freedom of speech gives you a responsibility too. Ann
Heberlin, who is a doctor in theology, said in an article “The fact that we
can say what we want, doesn’t mean that we should say all we can.”
The freedom of opinion is a part of freedom of speech. The freedom of
opinion is unlimited, but the right to freely express what you think can be
limited and has to be done with responsibility, for example for the sake of
others' rights and freedoms.
With this law, you are not allowed to censor what someone has written
before it’s published. When you are a source for an article and you want
to be anonymous, it is forbidden by law to try to track you because of the
reports protection. We also have freedom of information, that makes it
possible to give classified information to the press without breaking any
law. This makes it very easy for anybody to clarify their opinion in the
press. This can come with both good and bad, with great power comes
great Responsibility. You can write almost anything in a book, be careful
what you believe in. It could be good information or total rubberish.
