ETHNIC
COMPOSITION
VIETNAMESE ETHNIC GROUPS
KINH
First, I want to present to you the Kinh (Viets). They are the oldest and the
largest ethnic group in Vietnam. They have the most developing economy and
the richest multiform culture. “Ao dai” is the traditional dress in particular, or
Vietnam’s in general, mean “long dress”, consisting of a long high necked,
close fitting tunic that is split along the side to the waist and worn over loose
fitting trousers. It is considered as a symbol of Vietnamese beauty.

HMONG
The second ethnic group is Hmong. The Hmong are the eighth largest ethnic
minority in Vietnam and with a total population of under 600,000. They are
settled widely over northern Vietnam but most densely along the Lao and
Chinese borders. Hmong preferably build their houses on the ground rather
than stilts. They are famous for their embroidery and also batik which in
evidence on the wide variety of costumes of their various branches.

TAY
The Tay is an ethnic minority group with a huge population of
about 1.7 million people. This makes them the second largest
ethnic group in Vietnam after the majority Viet ethnic group.
The live in the northern mountainous areas of Vietnam in
particular in the Cao Bang, Lang Son, Bac Kan, Thai Nguyen, and
quangninh provinces, where they along the valleys under lower
slopes of mountains.
The Tay people have their own speaking and writing language.
They mainly live on farming and they are very experienced
farmers. They use traditional agricultural methods and grow crops
like wheat, corn, potato and vegetables.
Their costume is simple but very beautiful. The main colour is
black. Tay women like to wear skirts and their traditional dress
“Sarong”.
The Tay’s food is all maid from nature: leaves, roots, grass and
fruits from trees and wild animal’s meat.
The Tay usually live in stilt houses which are made of wood and
leaves. They live in the foothills of mountains.
