Vol. 1, Issue 3, March 2015 | Page 3

Winter is a time for planning. It's a time to set goals and finalize project lists. By the time February rolls around things are starting to ramp back up to full speed. By the looks of the projects I see my friends undertaking in online forums and on Facebook, I see that everyone is taking advantage of these colder months for some significant upgrades.

Personally, I’m going to recover my boat's floor, as well as build an aluminum deck on top of my light rail. Unfortunately, time is running out for me to get my pusher fan installed this spring, but people that know me well would never rule it out. It’s also time for sporting show season to kick off for me. I’ll be attend-ing shows around Wisconsin to promote bowfishing and hopefully fill up my guiding calendar for 2015.

In this month’s issue I take a quick break from these plans and take you home with me to Maine. The cold, deep waters of many lakes there hold Burbot - a gruesome looking fish that is not well regarded for its sporting qualities, but still provides action when other species shut off. Additionally, when prepared properly Burbot are considered the “poor man’s lobster”.

Maine is a fantastic place to seek out more mainstream species as well, especially when open water locks up the lakes in January, allowing access to everyone. I’ll provide you with 32 years of experience in chasing a variety of fish species and some choice waters to venture to, if you can handle the cold.

This month we are also excited to have a feature contribution from AMS Pro-Staffer Ty Smith. He explains how South Dakota has listened to the desires of its sportsmen and established a season for bowfishing/spearing of Northern Pike through the ice during winter months. This is something I’d like to try myself sometime soon.

Lastly, based on the number of questions I see related to LED lights, convert-ers, and batteries, especially related to running silent at night, I’ve asked special contributor Michael Cerda to break down the theory, the formulas, and the facts around battery strategy. Armed with this information, readers should be able to make informed decisions before making purchases, as well as have proper expectations for their own setups.
