Dos & Don'ts of Overnight Summer Camp Do Don’t • especially if you’re in a camp that has a lot of physical activity involved in your daily schedule. Sweat causes you to lose many important bodily fluids, water being the most prominent of them, and I’m quite sure the last thing you’ll want is getting heat stress and passing out on your summer vacation. Keep a water bottle with you at all times and drink from it often, even if you don't feel thirsty; you should be drinking the equivalent of eight cups of water a day (or more) in order to stay hydrated in the hot summer weather. • • Most overnight camps take place in the wilderness, where there’s certainly going to be many, many insects that bite; bug spray will help defend you from them. Also, camp activities take place almost exclusively outside during the day, so don’t forget to lather on that sunblock! • This isn’t your local friendly neighbourhood; you will most likely be out in the wilderness, where there are many potentially dangerous animals lurking out there. If you ever need to leave the group for whatever reason, ensure you inform your instructor and/or have a partner with you. • While there’s no harm with having some fun in the sun, the sun is actually the main cause of the aforementioned heat stress. Stay safe by taking frequent breaks beneath the shade. They’re there for a reason to keep you safe and sound during your time away from home. • No matter how tempting it is, you will be extremely tired in the morning and will not have the energy to do anything the next day if you stay up late. Ensuring you get your rest during camp is extremely important. • • Ask before you pick, because you don’t know what could be potentially endangered; it is also possible that your summer camp is located on a private property that won’t approve of you plucking their plants. If you have hurt yourself, feel unwell, or have some other worrying problem, go to them immediately for guidance. As I said before, your instructors are there to help! • Even if they look tasty, they could contain poisons that are fatal to humans. • Don’t be shy; open yourself up and be more social, and you’ll end up making many good friends during your time at camp. Stare challenges in the eye and meet them. Participate in games and activities. Keep a diary, perhaps, and record your precious memories inside it. Camp won’t last forever, so enjoy it while you can!
