I’m unashamedly pro-immigration. Since I am from a migrant family it would be a tad hypocritical of me not to support it – in theory. And Australia has had some hiccups, but on the whole, multiculturalism has worked. Furthermore, having studied economics, I know only too well that immigration doesn’t take jobs. It creates them. Plus, I am a selfish person. I know the best way to get ex-Muslims is to let them in. Oh, and did I mention the food?

But murders of refugee workers, robberies, assaults, rapes and more importantly, police cover-ups needs to be discussed. Laurie Penny’s red herring that there are some bigots and racists about ‘co-opting’ the discussion was a pretty poor attempt at distracting us from the problem that has reared its ugly head. Her attempt to deflect from this problem was thinly disguised.

Penny suggests that the right are pretending to be concerned about rape to express their bigotry. Yes, there are some racists/bigots about. But on the whole, the right are concerned with the same issues they have always been concerned about: mass immigration and law & order. The assaults are merely the evidence. And the title says it all,

‘After Cologne, we can’t let the bigots steal feminism’. She is more concerned with the bigots, than she is for the victims. At no time does she mention that the attacks may have been coordinated. This is more than one or two frisky gents who have imbibed one too many.

Funnily enough, it took a Muslim, Majiid Nawaz to voice what I have been thinking. If we are to continue to allow large numbers of people into our communities from countries with vastly different cultures, then it is unacceptable to merely shrug our shoulders and tell ourselves that this collateral damage is inevitable. Like it or not, immigration isn’t going away. So leave out the red herrings, how are we going to tackle this problem? Nawaz suggests extensive education programs for new migrants and this may not be enough, but at least he is not trying to distract us with red herrings.
