Welcome to The Gardens at Wynyard Hall...
Originally developed in 1822 during the Londonderry family’s residence, The Gardens
formed both a beautiful visitor attraction and part of Wynyard’s sustainable estate for
decades until they closed shortly before the war.
The opening of the Walled Garden in 2015, saw this legacy reinstated as part of the
realisation of Sir John Hall’s personal ambition to create one of the most exquisite rose
gardens in the UK. Now this showcase of stunning architecture and delicate artistry
has become much more than a picturesque plot, as Sir John’s daughter Allison,
continues her father’s legacy, extending the Wynyard estate and shaping an
enchanting realm to inspire future generations.
From a Dream into Reality...
Following Wynyard Hall’s restoration into a luxury hotel, it was a natural
progression to restore The Gardens to their former beauty. It seemed like the
perfect combination, pairing Sir John’s lifelong dream of a magnificent rose
garden, with Allison’s concept for a farm shop, café and retail space. Landscape
architect Alistair Baldwin, Metnor Construction and Swinburne Horticultural
Services were appointed - designs were created, plans were developed and
construction began. With natural creative flair, Allison had a firm idea of how she
wanted the Farm Shop to be – from gorgeous fittings and fixtures to artisan
produce that is taste tested every step of the way. The finished product is a
lovely, light, airy space to eat and shop, even if you’re not visiting The Gardens.
The whole experience expands each year, and the second season saw the
grand opening of the Edible Garden and Victorian-inspired Glasshouse. Looking
ahead, The Gardens will become a much-loved attraction for the whole family to
enjoy, with visions to open up the parkland for generations to come.
