transport of yesteryear can see old trolleys built between the
years 1859 and 1963.
Did you know that Baltimore also has a Washington
Monument? It’s in Mount Vernon (and for the record, ours
was first). In December, the annual Monument Lighting of the
178-foot landmark launches Baltimore’s holiday season with
festivities like music, fireworks, food and more. During the
rest of the year, visitors can tour the inside and climb the 227
stairs to the top for an outstanding view of the city.
In Pigtown, which gets its name from the days when it was
home to butchers and meat-packing plants, train lovers
should head to the B&O Railroad Museum, where visitors
can take a ride along the first mile-and-a-half of track laid
in America. Just a block away is the Irish Railroad Workers
Museum, dedicated to the workers who laid the rail. The
museum is even housed in the homes where the workers
once lived.
To the north, scenic Druid Hill Park is practically made
for family fun. A 745-acre urban green space that dates
back to 1860, the park hosts many public programs that
include farmers markets, walking and biking tours, hiking,
entertainment and outdoor fitness classes. It also houses the
Maryland Zoo, which features an award-winning African
penguin exhibit and many other exhibitions and special
events. Plant lovers should seek out the park’s Howard
Peters Rawlings Conservatory and Botanic Gardens, housed
in a beautiful glass building that showcases plants from
around the world. Q
