5 VATSIM TIPS

any pilots wish to learn how to fly on VATSIM but for many most virtual pilots don’t know where to start. Virtual United Airlines will be teaming up with various VATSIM ARTCC’s to provide new pilots with a basic understanding of how to fly on VATSIM. Virtual UA will hosting events in the coming future welcoming all beginner VATSIM pilots to learn fundamental skills needed for VATSIM. In this month’s edition of Contrails we will be explaining 6 tips every VATSIM pilot should know. These tips may apply to beginner pilots to seasoned pilots.

Contacting a controller can be one of the most stressful parts of starting a flight for many pilots. When first contacting a controller pilots must tune to the frequency a controller is on. The frequency for controllers can be seen on the main window of the software you choose to use for VATSIM. Once tuned to the controller's frequency it may seem chaotic however listening to the frequency for a few minutes will help ease pilots into the world of VATSIM. Once on frequency press your hotkey in which will allow you to speak onto frequency. Explain to a controller that you are new to VATSIM then you’ll be able to request a departure clearance. Departure clearances state your callsign, intended flight rule (IFR or VFR) and arrival airport. An example would be “United 2564 requesting IFR clearance to Los Angeles International Airport as filed.” .

Pilots many times are often confused in which software is needed to fly on VATSIM. VATSIM recommends to use the following programs: vPILOT, Squawkbox, FSInn, or XSquawkbox (Xplane). These downloads are avalible via the vatsim.net website. FSUIPC is very important to have installed. This program communicates between your simulator and VATSIM. Without FSUIPC it is impossible to access ATC on VATSIM.
