SWING SEQUENCE Jake Mondy 1 2 3 ASK JAKE MONDY ABOUT HIS FUTURE GOALS IN THE GAME, and he’ll tell you that he wants to play on the PGA Tour. In order to do so, we’re helping to build a swing that’s more repeatable and produces consistent results because his swing is on a better plane and much more efficient. He’s sacrificed some distance for accuracy, and his swing is still a work in progress. “I’ve taken some of the lag out of it,” Mondy says. “I don’t hit it quite as far as I used to. I don’t really need to because I can hit it plenty far. I just needed to hit more fairways and greens. My mindset is a little bit different and I think about things with a new perspective.” Part of altering Jake’s motion has revolved around revamping his 10 VIRGINIA GOLFER | SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2014 4 takeaway and backswing. Rather than feeling so shut with the clubface, he’s worked to get the club more up with the hinging of his wrists, resulting in a clubface that is in a square position when it first gets level with the ground. As a result, the position of the clubface is in a more neutral, not closed, position at the top. From the completion of his backswing, he’s all set up to strike the ball solidly. Jake occasionally goes back to his old ways: too much spine lean to the left and hand action in the transition, which shuts the clubface. These moves make it difficul
