SOUTHERN VIRGINIA Explore the beauty of Central Virginia while playing one of the nation’s top public courses at Spring Creek. ➽ TOP PICK THE HIGHLAND COURSE AT PRIMLAND RESORT MUCH HAS BEEN SAID about Primland as a resort, but the Highland Course itself is a worthy—if not far-flung—destination for most in the state, even if you’re not staying overnight. Located in Meadows of Dan, between Martinsville and Hillsville on U.S. 58 near the North Carolina border, the Highland Course was ranked 28th on Golf Digest’s Top 100 list. The Donald Steel design, which opened in 2006, takes advantage of natural elevation changes and mountain views. In short, the Highland Course doesn’t it force itself on the natural surroundings. Instead, it works with nature to form a unique golf experience. Or as Steel said, “When I first saw Primland, it reminded me of the highlands of Scotland. I knew this was the perfect spot for a truly exceptional course.” COST BREAKDOWN From April–November, rates range from $135 to $225 per person. Only registered lodge guests may play between December and the end of March. FUN FACT The club’s head teaching professional, Craig Gunn, PGA, is a past State Open of Virginia champion. DON’T MISS Hey, while you’re down in this part of the Commonwealth, why not head over to Olde Mill in Laurel Fork? Ellis Maples designed the course more than 40 years ago and recently, his son Dan and grandson Brad have made renovations to layout. Prices for daily play range from $35 to $60, depending on time of day and year. The iconic Primland Resort reminded course designer Donald Steel of the highlands in Scotland. His architecture didn’t disappoint. vsga.org M AY / J U N E 2 0 18 | V I R G I N I A G O L F E R 33
