Outdoor recreation is celebrated during Dominion Riverrock, the nation’s largest outdoor sports and music festival, held at Brown’s Island in the heart of downtown’s riverfront during late spring. The festival has everything from kayaking and biking to stand-up paddleboarding and dog jumping. Visitors from around the world come to Richmond to experience the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, one of the top comprehensive art museums in the United States. Open 365 days a year with free general admission, the VMFA’s permanent collection has more than 33,000 works of art spanning 5,000 years of world history. Be sure to check out its Fabergé collection as well as its collection of English silver, art nouveau and art deco and African art. The museum’s recent acquisitions of African American art put it at the forefront of museums. During your visit to the museum, take a few moments to meander through the E. Clairborne and Lora Robins Sculpture Garden with its relaxing waterfall. The area also serves as an exhibition space for the museum’s permanent and temporary sculpture collections. Last year the museum was home to InLight Richmond, a public showing of light-based art and performances. The annual event is organized by 1708 Gallery, which is representative of the many outstanding art galleries in the city. One of the city’s signature art events is First Fridays RVA, a year-round art walk that features a variety of galleries in the downtown area. Keep your eyes peeled for outdoor art while you’re buzzing around Richmond. The city is home to dozens of murals. The yearly Richmond Mural Project is on its way to create more than 100 murals by worldrenowned artists in the span of five years.
