HAMPTON ROADS
BREWERIES OF NOTE: Alewerks, St. George,
O’Connor, Smartmouth, Reaver Beach
CHOICES FOR THE COURSE: The flagship
brew at O’Connor in Norfolk is the Red Nun
Red Ale. Though it pours a robust red, it goes
down smooth at 5.5 percent ABV. A perfect
post-round treat. … Alewerks in Williamsburg
made its reputation on its big, hoppy IPAs,
like Drake Tail and Bitter Valentine. But their
Wheat Ale, unfiltered, hazy and medium in
color, is a third quencher and comes in at 5.6
percent ABV. … Also in Norfolk, check out
Smartmouth and its award-winning Alter Ego
Saison, a Belgian session ale brewed in the
farmhouse style of a saison.
ROANOKE/LYNCHBURG/
SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA
BREWERIES OF NOTE: Parkway, Chaos
Mountain, Wolf Hills, Apocalypse Ale Works,
Sunken City, River Company
CHOICES FOR THE COURSE: River Company
is located in Radford, not far from Pete Dye River
Course of Virginia Tech, host of the 103rd VSGA
Amateur Championship. While in town, try a
Peachicot, which won gold for best fruit beer at
the Virginia Craft Brewers Cup. The fruit complements the beer, rather than overpowering it. … In
Abingdon, Wolf Creek’s Creeper Trail Amber Ale
features seven different hops and a dose of Columbus and Cascade hops. At just 5 percent ABV, it
packs full flavor without the punch. … Parkway,
out of Salem, has its own take on the session IPA,
Factory Girl, which comes in at 4.5 percent ABV
and 55 IBU.
