A Summer of Competiton
THE VSGA CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON BEGAN in late April,
but the competition around the state really heats up in the summer months. Want

Here’s a quick look at what’s ahead for the Commonwealth’s top amateurs in May,
June and the first part of July:
34th VSGA Senior Four-Ball Championship
Dates: May 23-24
Site: Williamsburg Golf Club
VSGA championships hosted: 4 (last,
2014 Junior Stroke Play)
Defending champion: Keith Decker
(Chatmoss CC) and Pat Tallent (Westwood CC)
Format: 36 holes of stroke play.
Fun fact: Decker and Tallent are looking to
become the event’s first three-peat winners
since Bob Moyers and Jim Kite won five in a
row from 1991-95.
31st VSGA Super Senior Stroke Play
Championship
Dates: June 1-2
Site: Fawn Lake Country Club, Fredericksburg
VSGA championships hosted: 6 (last,
2015 Four-Ball Stroke Play)
Defending champion: John Cuomo (Laurel
Hill GC)
Format: 36 holes of stroke play.
Fun fact: The last three events have been
decided in a playoff.
31st VSGA Senior Stroke Play Championship
Dates: June 13-14
Site: Country Club of Petersburg
VSGA championships hosted: 13 (last,
2015 Super Senior Four-Ball)
Defending champion: James Gallagher
(Tidewater Amateur Golf Tour)
Format: 36 holes of stroke play.
Fun fact: Gallagher is looking to become the
third straight player to win two consecutive
titles in the event. Keith Decker won in 201314; Tim Kelley won in 2011-12.
39th VSGA Women’s Stroke Play
Championship
Dates: June 13-15
Site: Winchester Country Club
VSGA championships hosted: 8 (last,
2015 Senior/Super Senior Stroke Play)
Defending champion: Elsa Diaz
(Independence GC)
Format: 54 holes of stroke play.
Fun fact: Two Rivers CC in Williamsburg
played tough in 2015. Diaz’s winning score of
221 was the event’s highest since 2006.

Championship
Dates: June 14-15

VSGA championships hosted: 8 (last,

Defending champion: Mary Cabriele (CC
of Fairfax)
Format: 36 holes of stroke play.
Fun fact: The last time the event was
decided by more than a stroke was in 2007
when Natalie Easterly finished three shots
clear of Mimi Hoffman.
26th VSGA Junior Match Play Championship
Dates: June 21-24
Site: Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club,
Kilmarnock
VSGA championships hosted: 4 (last,
2014 Super Senior Amateur)
Defending champion: Mark Lawrence Jr.
(Hermitage CC)
Format: 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying for
16 match-play spots. 18-hole championship
match.
Fun fact: Lawrence is playing college golf
at Auburn, ensuring there will be a new
champion in 2015. He became the second
three-time winner of the event, joining Mikey
Moyers (2007-09).
1st VSGA Women’s Four-Ball Championship
Date: June 27
Site: Fredericksburg Country Club
VSGA championships hosted: 8 (last,
2007 Virginia-Maryland Junior Girls Matches)
Format: 18 holes of stroke play.
Fun fact: Fredericksburg Country Club
will also host qualifying for the 2017 U.S.
Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship
later this summer.
103rd VSGA Amateur Championship
Dates: June 28-July 2
Site: Pete Dye River Course of Virginia
Tech, Radford
VSGA championships hosted: 3 (last,
2014 Virginia-West Virginia Team Matches)
Defending champion: Maclain Huge
(Loudoun G&CC)
Format: 36 holes of stroke-play qualifying for 32
match-play spots. 36-hole championship match.
Fun fact: Four-time VSGA Amateur
champion Brinson Paolini was on the Duke
team that won the 2011 NCAA East Regional
at River Course.
47th VSGA Junior Girls Championship
Dates: July 6-7
Site: Evergreen Country Club, Haymarket
VSGA championships hosted: 4 (last,
1992 Four-Ball Stroke Play)
Defending champion: Elizabeth Bose
(Sewells Point GC)
Format: 36 holes of stroke play.
Fun fact: Bose, the 2015 champion, was the
runner-up in 2013 to Amanda Hollandsworth.
The two are now teammates at Virginia Tech.
