players should be aware because trouble
abounds following an errant tee shot.
Huge trees that must be avoided dominate the perilous right side. Abrams Creek,
together with two forbidding willow trees,
defend the left side. For those players challenging the green on their tee shot, the landing area pinches in as the trees push in from
the right and two strategically positioned
bunkers protect the putting surface.
While the 10th represents an excellent
birdie opportunity as an accurate tee shot
sets up a very short approach to one of the
relatively flatter greens at Winchester,
players need to manage their games and
execute well thought-out shots, particularly
at medal play, on this little gem. The ladies
can expect to see a wide variety of scores on
the 10th at this year’s championships.
Winchester Country Club is an ardent
supporter of the VSGA. In addition to the

women’s events in June, the club has previously been the venue for several VSGA Men’s
Senior Stoke Play Championships along with
the VSGA Club Championship. Winchester
will play host to two VSGA One-Day Events
this year—a regular event on May 23, and
the One-Day Two-Person Championship
on September 12. Winchester is also a longtime VSGA VIP participating course and this
year the club offers an expanded window to
enjoy this truly entertaining design.
Winchester annually hosts two outstanding better ball championships. The Billy
Phillips Four-Ball, held in memory of the
beloved Mr. Phillips who was the head golf
professional at WCC for 45 years, and the
Curly Licklider Four-Ball, memorializing
the long-time, superb course superintendent at WCC.
VSGA EDITORIAL CHANGE
Beginning with this issue of Virginia Golfer, our readers will see a change in our
contributing writers. Bruce Matson, the recently elected President of the Virginia State
Golf Association and the former editor of the Great Holes of Virginia series, will step back
from his writing responsibilities so he can devote more time to leading the organization.
David Partridge, the original editor who created this feature for the first nearly 15 years
it appeared in Virginia Golfer, will resume writing the article. David will work closely with
Jon Hood of Jon Hood Photography of Richmond to bring you this series.
