SMILEY NAMED NEXT VSGA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Matt Smiley , a member of the VSGA staff since 2003 , will become the organization ’ s new Executive Director , effective Jan . 1 , 2019 . Smiley will succeed Jamie Conkling , who announced in December 2016 that he will retire from the position on Dec . 31 , 2018 .
Smiley was promoted to VSGA Assistant Executive Director in January 2017 after spending 10 years as the organization ’ s Director of Rules and Competitions . He joined the VSGA staff in 2003 after two stints as a P . J . Boatwright Intern . He served as the VSGA Women ’ s Tournament Manager and Assistant Director of Rules of Competitions before being promoted in 2008 .
“ The VSGA has been a huge part of my life and I am excited about the opportunity to lead the association through its next chapter ,” Smiley said . “ I look forward to continuing to create opportunities for golfers around Virginia to deepen their love for and engage in this great game .”
VSGA PARENT-CHILD TOURNAMENT SET FOR AUGUST Interested in teeing it up in a championship with your child ? The VSGA has a new event for you .
Spring Creek Golf Club in Zion Crossroads will host the 1st VSGA Parent-Child Championship on Aug . 8 . The championship will be an 18-hole , two-person captain ’ s choice competition with an overall winner , age-group winner , and age-group runner-up prizes . And it ’ s not just for parents of young children . Teams will be divided into age groups based on the younger player ’ s age . Tentative groups will be 13 and under , 14-16 , 17-19 , 20-29 and 30 and over .
The event is open to male and female golfers of all ages . Parents are defined as anyone who is a parent , grandparent , step-parent or guardian to their child . For more information , visit vsga . org .

2018 . A partnership established between the Virginia Department of Transportation and Keep Virginia Beautiful , the Adopt-a-Highway program encourages new participants to join the thousands of groups that have helped keep Virginia ’ s roadways litter free since it was first established in 1988 .

litter and be recognized for their efforts with a sign featuring their name after two pickups have been documented .
An increase in miles covered with regular litter cleanups will translate into overall savings for the Commonwealth and provide a cleaner , green environment for all to enjoy .
