Cultural Programming

Villa Charities reinforced its place as a GTA leader in Italian cultural programming during 2019 , adding new events and building upon popular ongoing programs .
Villa Al Fresco
New for 2019 , VCI launched the “ Villa Al Fresco ” summer programming series . The series helped create a vibrant , eventfilled season for our community , with the “ Cinema al Fresco ” outdoor screenings of classic Italian movies , Ballo Liscio ( Social Dancing ), Pizza Nel Parco ( Pizza in the Park ) outdoor dining events , a family fun Carnival Day , a pop-up summer market and an Italian Family Trivia Night .
Pop-Up Art Installation
The Columbus Centre hosted a pop-up art installation by a talented , young Italian Canadian artist , Sara Della Guarda . Della Guarda ’ s “ IMPACT : A Dialogue on Art & Memory ,” discussed the topics of Alzheimer ’ s and dementia through an interactive art installation .

Independent Seniors’ Apartments At Villa Charities’ three apartment buildings for independent seniors – Casa Del Zotto, Caboto Terrace and Casa Abruzzo – a wide variety of programs, services and social events were provided to the buildings’ 731 residents. Positive feedback was received during 2019 from many of the residents. Fr. Celestino Canzo. Spiritual care was also provided at Casa Abruzzo, where residents have for many years organized a weekly celebration of the Holy Mass, led by Fr. Vitaliano Papais. Building Upgrades An ongoing program to upgrade the apartment buildings continued in 2019. Improvements included: • A new rooftop air supply unit at Caboto Terrace • New high-quality furniture for the party rooms in Caboto Terrace and Casa Del Zotto Spiritual Care New in 2019, Holy Mass was celebrated every Sunday at Casa Del Zotto for seniors unable to attend church, led by retired priest Fr. Peter Giopatto. This was in addition to longstanding prayer services organized by another retired priest, • New winter carpets in the lobbies of Casa Del Zotto and Caboto Terrace • A newly painted party room at Casa Del Zotto • Ongoing suite renovations and upgrades “Each building played host to numerous special events.” 42 | Friday night dancing and milestone birthdays. Consolidated Annual Report 2019 A Wide Range of Programs, Services and Events Each building played host to numerous special events including La Festa della Beffana, Valentine’s Day, International Women’s Day, St. Joseph’s Day (Zeppole), Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Canada Day, barbeques in the Piazza, Feast of Ferragosto, National Grandparents Day, Thanksgiving, Halloween, Remembrance Day and New Year’s Eve parties. Christmas/Holiday parties were held in each building with a luncheon, live music and dancing. At Casa Abruzzo, the celebration included day care kids singing Christmas carols and a musical performance by Coro Folkloristico Italia Di Toronto. Residents in all buildings also organized regularly scheduled events such as bingo, Tombola, Villa Colombo Community Services continued to offer programs for seniors requiring support to live independently. The Assisted Living Program, for example, provides personal care and home support to seniors at all three buildings in conjunction with local Community Care Access Centres. Other programs include the Seniors Active Living Centre, Alzheimer’s Day Program, Frail Elderly Program, Transition Group and Meals on Wheels. Social engagement was facilitated through services such as exercise classes in partnership with Circle of Care and the Villa Colombo Community Services Congregate Dining Program. Separately, residents received assistance with income tax, educational and other services from Centro Anziani. For non-senior residents with physical and mental health challenges, a variety of in-house support services were provided. Consolidated Annual Report 2019 | 43
