EDITOR / INDEX
Editor’s Note
I hope everyone is rested after the Easter
break. The public holidays are now be-
coming fewer – so no more long week-
ends. Well its back to horses as compan-
ion animals again. The CPD accredited
article concerns the diagnosis of the
causes of incontinence in horses. The
surgical article in this edition is a stepwise
approach to feline perineal urethrosto-
my. We see urethral obstruction much
less frequently than in the distant past,
before the advent of premium brands of
cat food, but there are still many cats
on supermarket brands which may be predisposed to urolith-
iasis and require long term management with a urethrostomy
for whatever reason .The technique is actually simple and the
outcome is good provided that tension is reduced by proper
dissection of the soft tissue surrounding the penis. It’s delicate
surgery but not rocket science and should be within the scope
of normal general practice veterinarians with reasonable surgi-
cal skills. The practice management article emphasises that is
how you ask questions which determine the answer you get.
Practice surveys are helpful sources of information, but only if
planned and implemented properly. The journal scan on peri-
operative use of desmopressin in mammary tumours is from
a paper I used many years ago to manage a few cases and on
which I more recently saw new trial data emerging. It’s a simple
perioperative treatment intervention which does seem to have
vast benefits for the patient.
