Homer’s sons Stephen E. Royce and H.
Charles Royce practiced law in St. Albans.
His cousin Herman S. Royce, who had partnered with Homer for some years, was
another member of the Royce dynasty in
Franklin County.68 After becoming the focus of criticism during the time Homer was
pursued by Maloney and was pursuing Maloney, Stephen E. gradually withdrew from
the practice of law, beginning in 1886, and
took the presidency of the Willard Manufacturing Company. The company made
coats and vests, including water-proof
sporting suits.69 Homer’s health began to
fail him during his last years on the Court,
and Frank Fish reported that “It is now no
secret that [H. Charles] Royce wrote some
of the opinions which his father handed
down while he was Judge.”70 H. Charles
served as referee in bankruptcy for many
years, and was offered a seat
