VEILED: PERSPECTIVES There is always talk about female modesty but not enough conversation on the male modesty. Both are very clearly outlined in the Qur’an. Men and women should both be modesty and chaste. Men need to respect women in the way that they treat women. Lowering your gaze defeats the treatment of people as sexually desireable objects. There’s not enough conversation about men’s role in Islam. Men are told to lower their gaze regardless of the other person’s dress, fully covered or not. Even in the Western world, the degree of conversation regarding female dress over male dress and how much it is scrutinized is a reflection of our society. A woman’s body is far more sexualized than a man’s body. Islam’s recommendation on male and female dress is comparable to what is seen in our everyday society. Women visibly cover more than men to protect them from lewd intentions and society’s tendency to impose sexuality and objectification on women more than on men.
