VEILED: PERSPECTIVES
“Occassionally I will wonder how nice it would be to walk
outside and feel the wind run through my hair. I do have
those thoughts, but I have never actually thought about
taking my hijab off. If I really get the urge, I will just go
onto my balcony.”
Wearing the hijab is a big choice. It’s a difficult thing to wear, especially in this society. When
a girl initially decides to wear the hijab, she needs to be certain and understand it entirely in
order to feel comfortable with herself and amongst other people. It’s something you have to
feel really close to because it is not the norm.
The recent backlash towards Islam has led to many unnecessary and misguided actions and
comments. A woman on the public transit spat very derogartory and awful words towards
Ifrah and no one around had said anything in response. The amount of women in and
around Toronto that have been harassed and assaulted because of their veil has left many of
the Muslim women in our communities scared. Without knowing what’s around the corner,
Ifrah avoids easy attack areas such as the edges of the subway platforms.
