VEILED: PERSPECTIVES “My religion and dress do not inhibit me from anything.” Lowering your gaze is understanding how you’re looking at someone. If you are being respectful of them, you do not need to look away or hold yourself back. Recognize your intentions and don’t let your body and sexual instincts guide you, let your mind have the upper hand. Some common themes and misconceptions of modesty as reinterpreted by others are that women who dress modestly should not be made up to be attractive, meaning no heavy use of make-up or trendy fashions. It is thought that because you are covered, you must be simple and plain. Modesty is respect for yourself and for your body. You can look however you feel comfortable. Looking attractive does not directly correlate to immodesty. Modesty is different for everyone. So long as you are living within your own boundaries of modesty then you are being modest in your own terms. It’s not as complicated as it is made out to be. 105
