VIAM:

How do we know if our information is getting out there? Can you give us some examples?

DAN:

If someone is using Facebook as a marketing and promoting tool and their marketing or promoting pieces that they post are not getting hundreds if not dozens of shares, if they aren’t getting hundreds if not just dozens of comments, and forget liking for a minute, forget liking the post. Liking the post means almost nothing to the performance of the posts. It’s a small part of your overall “engagement” number but the number that matters the most is the talking about number. I’ll get to that number in a minute. But if people’s posts, companies posts, artist’s posts are not getting those kind of numbers they don’t have an audience. No one is following it and no one cares. When I look at a post and see that the only share that post got was by the person that posted it, which is certainly okay to do, but if no one else is sharing it, no one else cares. It’s not resonating with anyone which means they have something to learn.

VIAM:

How and why did you develop and start teaching this course?

DAN:

I saw a huge need for artists in the community here to know this stuff. I saw and see many of the “business” practices by these folks and the skills are basically non-existent. They have no idea how to effectively market or promote, let alone know the difference between the two. It’s not their fault, they just never learned. I started these courses, teaching them here in Las Vegas and because my wife is an artist and between her being an artist anf me in music, I was seeing what was lacking in the arts community here. She also teaches art, she’s an educator, one on one and in class room situations. She teaches mix media, she has a jewelry line, sculptures, she’s done murals…she’s pretty active. So I’m tied into that form of the arts too.

Right before I started Drum Talk TV a little over a year and a half ago she and I were talking about - you know there are so many artists that don’t know how to get this part together – don’t know how to market so we should teach a class on this together.
