“Help my trap!” - In true Dutch style, cycling is part of their daily commute. John Matthijs and Christianne Heselmans ran a roundtable discussion on the Sustainable Mobility Project, hosted by Vega Cape Town. The project focuses on making Cape Town more bicycle friendly (yes, even with uphill battles and the blustery Cape Doctor!). Colleagues Dolf Nijsen and Bianca de Klerk joined Christianne, where Dolf ran a roundtable discussion themed ‘Quality of Life in Informal Settlements’ as part of the Craft and Design Institute’s Better Living Challenge. Some of the proposed solutions will now be tested to add real value to people’s lives. ubuntu texturised 3.pdf 1 9/25/2018 8:21:48 PM But what about the students I hear you ask? The Fontys exchange students described their time with us as an amazing experience where they learned a lot about themselves, made new friends, and experienced their studies at Vega as a huge plus to their current programmes. C M Y CM MY CY CMY K We are looking forward to welcoming the next four students in February 2019, and wish our three Vega students best of luck as they spend a semester at Fontys. UBUN TU I AM BECAUSE WE ARE International Ubuntu Design Project Several of our 3rd year Graphic Design students’ work was co-exhibited in internationally recognised designer, Armando Milani’s, exhibition in Milan. It was such a success that our Consulate wants to bring the exhibition to South Africa next year! Forza! #17 Writers, designers, digital designers, entrepreneurs, and strategists collaborate under one roof. Cape Town was recently named as Africa’s first design city by UNESCO, joining 180 cities in UNESCO’s global Creative Cities Network. Vega School represents the educational sector (with Navigator Thys de Beer serving as a steering committee member). Our first challenge was to design a logo that would reflect the spirit of this designation, and it came as no surprise that talented 3rd year Graphic Design student, Alecea Basson’s logo was selected as the official logo. According to Alecea she drew inspiration from both natural and cultural spheres, and local African cultural elements such as vibrant geometric pattern designs and rich colours as a creative driving force. She used natural elements as symbolism to convey the dynamic design ecosystem with sustainability as its foundation. The overall identity conveys the vibrant and dynamic nature of Cape Town as a city of design. We are very proud of you Alecea! wisdomwithmagic is coming to Deutschland! Alecea and fellow Veganite, Bernadene (Bernz) Clausing, will be joining the Offenbach University of Art and Design and the Leibniz Research Alliance in January 2019 for a month-long team challenge themed ‘making crisis visible’, and will investigate how crises can be made understandable and how their creative potential can be experienced through design.
