Vega Johannesburg will be supporting the RE-imagine Movement headed
by Vega co-founder Gordon Cook, who was appalled to discover that out
of 10,600 public high schools in SA, only 6.8% offer one or more of the five
creative arts subjects — music, art, design, dance or drama.
The old Alhambra Theatre, which is a listed historical building, will be
“reimagined” as the flagship hub for a number of performing arts schools,
offering, initially, “fast-tracked creative training” to high school pupils on an extra-
curricular basis, in conjunction with the Wits School of Arts, Vega and the University
of Johannesburg. The campus is looking forward to a briefing from Gordon Cook to
take the collaboration forward.
Vega Cape Town has identified the Salesian Institute, situated 300m from the
campus, as their Social Action partner. Aligned with Vega’s brand values of
inclusion and diversity, the Salesian Institute serves vulnerable children and
youth at risk, regardless of religion, race, gender or nationality.
The Institute offers various skills training and neighbourhood outreach
programmes to support youth in staying out of danger, finding good jobs and
leading happy lives. A shared vision with regard to effecting change and building
a better society through education, supports the partnership and the strategy
for collaboration is currently under development.
Vega Pretoria is proud to collaborate with CodeforChange as a Social Action
Partner.
In line with Vega’s strategy for 2025, Pretoria identified this forward-thinking
activist organisation where innovation and ground-breaking approaches have
been the foundation for all projects launched since 2009. Code4Change aspires
to equip unemployed youth and high school students with tangible IT
and Coding skills that will enable them to find purposeful
employment and successfully further their education.
Campus Navigators and students will participate in volunteer
programmes being delivered in schools, and will have the
opportunity to improve their own skills in this vital area.
