History of the Ugly Sweater

According to Mary Bellis, the inventor of the first ugly holiday sweater is hard to pinpoint. Inspired by the Eighties, ugly sweaters, are thought to have been handmade by non-fashion-conscious wives and mothers with the intention of being fashionable. They were often seen on comedic television shows such as "The Bill Cosby Show."

Bellis explains that "while no one wants to take the blame for the proliferation of ugly sweaters, the meme has nonetheless spawned a widespread festive tradition among younger folks. According to Time Magazine, there has been a noticeable revival of ugly Christmas sweater themed parties where they make fun of their parents who loved the festive looks and had thought that the sweaters were cute" (Bellis, 2018).
