FEATURE THOUGHTS FROM THE SHOP FLOOR Helen and Stacey from The Puffin Hut on the pros and cons of pod systems By Gordon Stribling The Puffin Hut is the first point of call for Wiltshire-based smokers looking to switch to a less-harmful alternative. The team tailor advice to each individual customer, ensuring that they have all the information and products they need to begin their vaping journey. This feature provides a window into life on the shop floor. In this issue, director Helen and retail support manager Stacey talk about this year’s hot topic – the pod system. “Until recently there hadn’t been much demand for pod systems. In the short period of time we’ve had them, we’ve found that they are a great resource for some of our customers. But as is often the case, they are not a one-size-fits all solution. “We only sell open systems as we believe that true customisability is hugely important. The great thing about pods is that you can easily switch between flavours. Many people like to start their day with a tobacco at breakfast and then switch to another flavour for the rest of the day. “They’re also perfect for use in the workplace. They’re discreet and light and very easy to use. Just pop in a pod and you’re good to go. And if you pair it with salt-based nicotine, there’s no need to “We only sell open systems as we believe that true customisability is hugely important” 106 | VM19 vape continuously throughout the day. The combination will keep you going for the next hour. “While a lot of older people like the simplicity of pods, it may take a bit of trial and error before they find a device and liquid combination that packs enough punch to replicate their 50-a-day smoking habit. Also, the battery won’t last very long if the device is used continuously and users can get through the two millilitre pods very quickly. “A pod can be cheaper though if you’re a light or social smoker or using if you’re using it as an out-and-about device. For example, the Mi-Pod comes with two reusable pods so for those people it’s great value for money. The non-refillable ones would work out more expensive than sub-ohming. “The best thing for a smoker to do would be to come into one of our shops and explain their needs and circumstances to one of the team. It may be that a pod system is right for them, but a different type of starter kit could be more appropriate. Many of our devices can be tested in the shop so there’s less risk of leaving with the wrong one.”
