BY BENEDICT ‘NED’ JONES The Red One VG/PG ratio: 70/30 Additional sweetener: Minimal Throat hit: Mild, with cooling Black + White VG/PG ratio: 70/30 Additional sweetener: Minimal Throat hit: Mild, with cooling The Red One is another profile from the Red Liquids range that should be familiar to veterans of the vaping world. This fruit, aniseed and menthol mix seems to be Red Box’s homage to the ever popular Red Astaire profile that continues to maintain a hardcore fanbase. The top note here is a bright red fruit medley. It’s present but not overpowering and brings a mellow sweetness to the mix, along with an intangible “red” flavour that seems to morph from one vape to the next. This is supported by a subtle aniseed, lending a hint of spice that augments the berry notes, without being too prominent. It’s subtle enough not to put off those who usually dislike aniseed, and may actually convert a few to the flavour. The profile is finished with a mild menthol coolant that keeps things light. This is a very solid Red Astaire. A simple blackcurrant and lemonade blend from the Red Liquids line. Blackcurrant is the star of the show here. It is substantial and brings a pleasant dark sweetness to the mix along with some real juicy body. This is supported by a moderately potent lemon that has characteristics of both candied and more natural portrayals, resulting in a nice boost to the overall sweetness, along with some more tart and zesty notes. These sharper citrus notes contrast well with the blackcurrant, causing the darker notes to become much more vivid. The mix is rounded off with a moderately-strong menthol finish, which does well to lift the profile, mask any harsher edges of the lemon and ensure that this is a solid, refreshing fruity vape. Black Ice VG/PG ratio: 70/30 Additional sweetener: Minimal Throat hit: Mild, with coolant Blackcurrant/menthol profiles have always been a firm favourite with new vapers and veterans alike, so how does this offering fare? This is a much bolder, deeper blackcurrant than is found in the other Red Liquids offerings and this makes sense given the stripped back context of this profile. There’s a mild natural sweetness along with floral and earthy notes here, and the result is quite an authentic blackcurrant top note. This is complemented by a mild coolant finish that lightens the profile somewhat without interfering with the flavour at all. Black Ice is a solid e-liquid that many vapers will enjoy. Red + Black VG/PG ratio: 70/30 Additional sweetener: Minimal Throat hit: Mild Red + Black is a simple but very intense vape from the Red Liquids line. The same blackcurrant base found in Black + White is present here and it provides a good helping of dark sweetness, along with some sticky body to the profile. Surprisingly, it’s not the key player in this case. Instead, a thick layer of aniseed dominates the mix here. It too brings a mild sweetness, along with some traces of spice. The main connotation though is that of traditional liquorice confectionery. This is perhaps the most forward aniseed I’ve ever tasted in e-liquid form and it is certainly true to life. Aniseed lovers will enjoy this. The Pink One VG/PG ratio: 70/30 Additional sweetener: Minimal Throat hit: Moderate, with cooling The Pink One from Red Liquid’s flagship line is described as a blend of berries, tropical fruit and menthol. Veteran vapers will instantly be familiar with this profile the minute they open the bottle. This is clearly a twist on the classic “Pinkman” blend that has become so popular in the UK. The top note is a candied dark berry. It’s fairly mellow, bringing some sweetness and a trace of some deeper notes to the mix. This contrasts with a much sharper tropical note which borders on citrus and, while quite reserved, it seems to be candy pineapple. The profile is finished with a very subdued menthol, which doesn’t get in the way and serves to keep things light. Red Kola VG/PG ratio: 70/30 Additional sweetener: moderate Throat hit: Mild, with cooling Another simple profile from Red Liquids. This is a stripped back cola and menthol blend. The cola in this case has some elements of a candy cola, with some of the herbal notes found in a more natural representation. It provides a sticky mouth-feel and a substantial amount of sweetness. The cola is offset by a moderately strong menthol finish, which cuts through the sweetness somewhat and doesn’t interfere very much with the main note. Red Kola is a good choice for vapers with a sweet tooth. THE VAPER EXPO | 153
